This painting has sold!

Nestled in the forest on the side of mountain, this was the homestead they called Bodie. The cabin as a piece of architecture was full of character and they say, the fellow who lived there was too. If only these old walls could talk, I can only imagine the stories they could tell. Some say moonshine was involved and others say they have found a still or two in those hills. As the older generations have passed on we have no one to corroborate the stories, so they keep getting passed around and have become the thing that legends are made of.

Wanna go to Bodie? I was thinking… this is what I should have named this painting. Growing up my cousin was always asking me, "Wanna go to Bodie?" I hadn't been since I was little, and my memory was pretty fragmented of the place. "Where will we stay?" I would ask. "In the cabin!" she would answer as if it was as normal as going to the Marriott. I had seen the little cabin at the other homestead, with it's 2 cots (or was it a bunk bed?) old wood stove, and piles of chipmunk and mouse droppings with torn paper covering the floor. "Naw, I don't think I want to go." I would say. Looking back now I am sorry I missed out on making memories there. As with all cabins that have no one living in them, the life has gone out of this one too. We were up there a couple of years ago and it's hard to tell if there was ever a view because of all the growth. Holes in the roof, holes in the floor, the grand old place is fading. We did find rhubarb still growing, unfortunately it was where the ticks were as well, so that was kind of a bummer for my cousin.

I love family history and artifacts. I love the old stories of the people that lived in these places, ("was your Gramma really in the circus?") and I love wondering about what their lives were like. People choose to "live off the grid" today, but in the early 1900s they didn't know any different and they lived their best lives right there, sometimes never leaving the county they grew up in. Fascinating!

Today's opera was "La Favorite" by Gaetano Donizetti. The music was very nice as were the voices. It was very nice background music.

Thinking of you and feeling very grateful for this little community we have created. Thank you all!
