Day 4 of 50 - Diminuendo

"Diminuendo", 7" x 5" watercolor
In music terms when we get gradually quieter it is called diminuendo. In this painting, this grand tree that has seen so much life is watching the sunset and the world get gradually quieter. The tree itself has stood steady through its share of storms and distress, but it's roots run deep, grounding and keeping it standing to see another sunrise.
Day 4 of this project woke me up at 5:30am. I'm still pretty tired from staying up to watch the 19 inning World Series game on Sunday. (If you are a baseball fan you will understand.) Today I was thinking about a recent trip we took and the stop we made in Coeur d’Alene at an art gallery. There is an artist I follow who is showing there, so I was excited to see her work up close. As we were looking at the artwork I noticed that hers were the only watercolors in the gallery. I asked about that and the gentleman mentioned that people don’t buy art under glass. They always buy the oil paintings instead.
There was a very long pause as I just looked at the man, thinking “you have got to be kidding me!” (Gary says I gave him the stink-eye.) He started back paddling saying “don’t get me wrong, I like watercolor, but people don’t hang glass in their homes.”
My cousin is a realtor and I was telling him about this conversation. He has seen his share of multi-million dollar homes. He thought for a long minute then said “You know what? I have been in a lot of homes and it’s true, you don’t see very many paintings under glass, unless they were done by a family member.”
For me, this is mind boggling. Watercolors have their own freshness and charm. They take a certain degree of mastery and yet they sell for 1/6th of what an oil painting would sell for. This makes me shake my head in amazement.
So I wanted to ask you here, do you have paintings on paper, framed with glass at your home, or do you prefer a canvas which doesn’t need glass and frame, or artwork mounted on board? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
For the next 24 hour this painting “Diminuendo” is on sale for $50, after that it jumps to $90.
I ship the paintings matted, but they do need UV protective glass or UV plexiglass to protect them from sunlight. Also don’t place them where they will get direct sunlight.
