Winter is coming on. There is fresh snow on the hills. The sheep are all in and accounted for, thanks to the good dog. Standing as strong as ever, the sheep barn has been the home for the flock for three generations. God willing, it will be sturdy and strong for a couple more generations.
I captured this photo south of Kalispell, MT. It was one of those times when I didn't want to make Gary pull the car over, and I don't think there was a place to pull over anyway. Rolling the window down, I held out the phone, praying I wouldn't drop it, pointed, and held my finger on the button as we came around the farm and it faded into the distance. In fact, it's a pretty good way to capture a scene. I used to crawl up through the sunroof, but Gary doesn't like me standing on the seat, so I don't do that anymore. Actually, that's not entirely true. Occasionally I still do it at the wildlife refuge because you can't get out of your car there. The sunroof is really the best option in that case.
While painting this barn, I learned that sheep don't like opera. I gave this new information to Gary, who said decisively, "I agree with the sheep. Why do you listen to it anyway?" That is a very good question. After thinking about it for a minute, I decided it's because of the urgency. So much of opera sounds very urgent and very demanding. I find myself matching that urgency with my brushstrokes. Does it help? Well, probably not, but it does keep it exciting. Then, when I'm writing, I always put on 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, by Arcangelo Corelli. Written in the late 1600s, this music, with its first and second violins and cello, keeps me focused and, hopefully, creative.
I'm running out to the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Vancouver, WA. My three paintings are still in the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society Show, and my friend Judith has 10 paintings on display at the Hilton on the second floor. I hope you have some fun plans tonight as well.
Stay dry out there! I'll be back tomorrow for Day 17. Thank you for following along, and thank you for your support of my fundraising effort for wildfire relief.
All the best,
Kristi
