This young foal is sticking close to mama, but is definitely curious to see us. It is so interesting that she is such a chestnut color compared to her mama's black and white coat. I love seeing baby horses out in a pasture! Painting this reminded me of two things. First Dan Fogelberg's song "Run for the Roses" and second how MIss Christensen used to read horse stories to us in the 2nd grade. I remember Brighty of the Grand Canyon, and Stormy, Misty's Foal. Misty of Chincoteague was probably in there too, all written by Marguerite Henry. Funny how a horse in a field can stimulate memories of me sitting in a schoolroom, drawing pictures and listening to all of Brighty's adventures. I appreciate those teachers who still read to their students, instilling in them the joy of traveling to different places just through those words in a book.
There is a woman from Australia that I follow online. She gave a drawing prompt one day, suggesting that we pick a flower, any flower, and after smelling it and sitting with it for a bit, draw the flower and make notes about all the memories that come just from the scent of the flower. The same way a song can take you back to a place and time, a smell can do the same thing. Popcorn for example, always makes me think of my mom making popcorn in her black cast iron skillet, shaking it back and forth across the burner. That's a funny memory… what kept it from popping all over the kitchen? Oh that makes me laugh!
Today I listened to Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito" (The Clemency of Titus). Again, I had it on in the background, so I didn't follow the storyline. It was great background music!
Thank you for taking the time to look at my little paintings. It really does mean an awfully lot to me.
Sending you blessings tonight,
Kristi
